Experiential learning opportunities are one of the best ways to build your skills, your portfolio, and your network, but they often come with a price tag. Do you need help paying for an opportunity? The SOJC may be able to help.
Support can cover most expenses related to your experiential learning opportunity, including:
- Costs related to unpaid or low-paying internship expenses (Looking for the SOJC Internship Support Fund? That program has a different application.)
- Study-abroad and study-away fees and travel expenses
- Independent research project supplies, purchases, field work expenses, and travel costs
- Registration and travel to attend a conference or present at a conference (Please note that we look for a clear and direct relationship and benefit between the conference and your academic field of study.)
- Other experiential learning expenses outside the classroom
* Note that these support funds do not cover wages or tuition.

The SOJC Internship Support Fund
This fund provides stipends to SOJC students for professional internships, covering expenses like wages, travel, and living costs.
Since its inception in 2021, the SOJC Internship Support Fund has provided funding for almost 100 students to support their first internship in college. According to a study from NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) in 2021, students from historically underrepresented populations are disproportionately underrepresented in internship experiences (Inequity in Internships, NACA, 2021). The SOJC Internship Support Fund is designed to address these gaps by increasing student accessibility to internship opportunities that will cultivate skills, build connections, and further their career readiness upon graduation. Additionally, internship fund recipients will meet with an SOJC Career & Academic Advisor to reflect on their internship experience and strategize how to articulate their experiences in their resume.

F. James Pensiero and Karen Miller Pensiero Journalism Experiential Learning Fund
This fund assists SOJC undergraduate journalism students with expenses related to off-campus study opportunities, prioritizing those in New York City.
"We learned that for years advertising students had been making an annual trip to visit major New York-based advertising agencies as part of their SOJC education. When we asked if journalism students were making the same trip to see New York-based titans such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, the answer came back: No. That seemed like the wrong answer, so we created a fund that would help finance the trip for students who lacked the resources to afford it."
