Our media studies graduate program allows you to pursue interdisciplinary studies and tailor your research to your interests. You’ll examine mass media and communication from every angle under the guidance of global experts at one of the nation’s oldest accredited schools of journalism and communication within an Association of American Universities R1 research institution. And you’ll build a lasting network as you collaborate with and learn from a tight-knit cohort, many of whom research the impact of media on underrepresented communities and spur positive changes in the field.

Communication and Media Studies Master’s student Travis Wilson explored how the TV show “Yellowstone” reinforces the frontier myth in Montana, negatively impacting the environment.
For her Communication and Media Studies Master’s capstone project, SOJC student Audrey Kalman collected photos and stories about denim jeans and created a digital archive that anyone can add to.
Whitney Phillips, assistant professor of media studies at the SOJC, was quoted in the Washington Post comparing the impact of the average millennial’s digital footprint to that of a vice-presidential candidate.
