Hands-On Learning, Real-World Experience
Practice Out in the Field
We believe the learning process isn’t complete until you practice your skills out in the world. As an SOJC journalism student, you'll get to hone your skills in the field during hands-on learning trips, like telling stories of resilience in New Orleans; by staffing an award-winning student publication like FLUX magazine, OR Magazine, or the Daily Emerald; by working a summer internship in places like Ghana; or by covering world-class athletic events such as the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 for the SOJC’s Track Bureau.
Catalyst for Change
The Catalyst Journalism Program helps fledgling journalists inspire community change by uniting investigative reporting with the growing practice of solutions journalism. Mentoring students in evidence-based reporting tactics that examine potential solutions to societal problems, Catalyst faculty integrate teaching, academic research, public lectures, and discussions into the program’s mission. Students help fill a reporting gap left by media consolidation while interning for local alternative publication Eugene Weekly.
Training Community Journalists
The Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism—named in honor of a longtime editor at The Oregon Journal and The Oregonian—is developing the next generation of responsible, community-minded journalists in Oregon. This prestigious internship program based at the SOJC places journalism students from universities across the state at Oregon media outlets, immersing them in community newsrooms, giving them the chance to cover breaking stories, and training them in the foundations of journalism ethics.
