Sopheakpanha Sok ’23 witnessed the barriers to women speaking up and speaking out about sexual harassment in her native Cambodia. So for her Strategic Communication Master’s capstone project, she authored an action plan.
Research shows that 24 percent of Cambodian women aged 18 to 24 reported receiving online sexual harassment messages, photographs or videos, and that Cambodian culture has often deterred women from reporting it. Through focus groups at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Sok also learned that women would be more apt to report incidents of sexual harassment if they knew a hotline existed.
So Sok created “HerStory,” a comprehensive strategic communication campaign designed to increase awareness of sexual harassment’s prevalence, encourage women to report incidents and direct them toward resources.
