Established in 1986 by Paul L. Smith '50 MS '51, in memory of his wife, Janet Beigal Smith '49, an outstanding high school teacher and adviser in journalism. Smith was a national high school newspaper journalism award winner and later served as public information officer for the Portland Public School System.

Qualifications
Awarded to students in the School of Journalism and Communication. First consideration is given to applicants who intend to become high school journalism teachers.
