Established in 1989 by the late John L. and Elizabeth R. Hulteng. Mr. Hulteng served as the dean of the School of Journalism and Communication from 1962-68 and 1975-76 and was described by colleagues as a "master teacher" of journalism and an authority on media ethics. He was inducted into the School's Hall of Achievement in 1999.

Qualifications
Awarded on the basis of financial need and scholastic ability to students majoring in the news-editorial sequence of the School of Journalism and Communication.
