The News/Editorial sequence is where the school began. As with most programs established before World War II, it formed the heart of the school as well as its primary focus. Recently, an improved and expanded job market for entry-level graduates has increased student interest in careers in editing, news design, online journalism and photojournalism. Although there is no formal connection between the School of Journalism and Communication and the daily newspaper on campus, many News/Editorial majors gain experience by working there. The News/Editorial faculty reflect substantial strength in both academic and professional experience. All have had significant newspaper experience, ranging from weeklies to metropolitan dailies.

a)  J361 Reporting I (Prereq: JNE standing)
b)  J461 Newspaper Editing (Prereq: J361)
c)  J462 Reporting II (Prereq: J361)
d)  Choose one course from the following (Prereq: J361):

•     J463 Specialized Reporting* (*Offered under various course titles.)
•     J464 Newspaper Design
•     J465 Cyberjournalism
•     J468 Advanced Newspaper Editing (Prereq: J461)
•     J483 The Journalistic Interview

Things you should know about this major:

1. J361 is offered every term. However, the summer J361 course can be canceled if there is insufficient enrollment.
   
2. J461 is only offered in the fall and winter so that J468 can be offered in the spring.
3. Theoretically, it is possible to take three news/ed courses in the same term once you’ve taken J361. However, it’s probably not a good idea...
4. The minimum journalism credits taken to complete the news/ed sequence do not add up to the 49 credits required by the major. JNE students have to take at least two elective credits in journalism.
