About Ronnie Owens Moss

Ronnie Owens Moss was a student in the School of Journalism and Communication, and ultimately received her undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon in Social Work. After receiving a scholarship to attend the University of California at Berkeley, Ronnie received her Master's Degree in Social Work and spent her career working primarily with developmentally disabled adults and children in San Francisco and Redding, California.

Ronnie has been described by friends, family and co-workers as a woman of great integrity and courage who taught by example as a supervisor and always backed up her staff if she knew they were doing their best. She had a great love for the arts especially the opera and ballet. She was well known at Far Northern Regional Center for the humorous plays she wrote, produced and directed casting Regional Center staff as actors and singers.

While writing wasn't the central focus of her career, good writing was always important to Ronnie. She was a "stickler for good spelling and punctuation", would hand papers back to employees if they were poorly written and frequently wrote heartfelt and humorous letters to friends and family. Even as her friends embraced e-mail, Ronnie insisted on handwriting responses, feeling that they were more personal.

Ronnie and Sam were high school sweethearts and married soon after graduation. Sam describes their marriage as the single best decision he ever made and credits the love and support he received from Ronnie as the reason for his happiness and success. Sam worked for the engineering firm now known as CH2M Hill, starting as a draftsman and retiring as a graphic designer 28 years later.

Sam chose to start the Ronnie Owens Moss Memorial Scholarship to help students pursue a career in journalism. In this way, Ronnie's influence will continue to be felt by students of the School of Journalism and Communication.
