Pre-Major Requirements

Becoming a Pre-major

Incoming freshmen and transfer students select "pre-journalism" as their major on their UO admission application. There is no formal application process to become a pre-major in the School of Journalism and Communication.

Current UO students who wish to add or change their major to "pre-journalism" should come to the Student Services Center in 101 Allen Hall to fill out a form to add the major. Current UO students must have a cumulative 2.70 GPA to be accepted as a pre-journalism major.

The Lower Division Core

All pre-journalism majors are required to take four "lower division core" courses before applying for full major status. These courses provide students with a common background of generic knowledge and skills required for advanced professional study in the communication fields. All four courses must be taken graded. J202 - J204 must be taken at UO. The lower division core courses are:

  • J201 Mass Media & Society
  • J202 Information Gathering (Prereq: Premajor status)
  • J203 Writing for the Media (Prereq: J101; WR 121 and WR 122 or WR 123)
  • J204 Visual Communication (Prereq: Premajor status)

The Grammar Requirement

All pre-journalism majors take a fifth lower division journalism course, J101 Grammar for Journalists. This course is a prerequisite for J203 Writing for the Media and must be passed with a C or better.

The Language Skills Diagnostic Test (LSDT) is no longer a pre-journalism major requirement.
