The Dixon Narrative Workshops

Learn the elements of nonfiction storytelling in a one-day intensive, hands-on seminar at the George S. Turnbull Center led by narrative nonfiction author and magazine journalist Lauren Kessler (www.laurenkessler.com), director of the SOJC's master's program in Literary Nonfiction. Kessler will be joined by multimedia reporters Katie Campbell and Michael Werner.

Telling stories is at the heart of being human. We all do it.  Some of us—writers and reporters —get paid for the privilege of doing it.

We want our stories to be meaningful and memorable, provocative and important, factual and resonant.  These are worthy – and difficult – goals.

Narrative journalism of this caliber comes from deep research and extensive fieldwork. It comes from going after, recognizing, and mining the details that make a story come alive.  It is work that blends the very best of reporting with the tools of the trade from cultural anthropology, sociology and oral history.  This kind of storytelling combines the sensibilities and ethics of the reporter with the sensitivities and aesthetics of the novelist.

Join us for an intensive, full-day exploration of the tools of narrative journalism.  Be part of the Dixon Workshop in Narrative Journalism.
