Getting started, a tutorial

by Andre Chinn last modified 03:39 PM Tue Nov 13, 2007

A short tutorial to get users oriented to this system.

This point of this document is to provide those new to the system with step-by-step instructions for placing material online. It is not meant to document every feature with the system. For more details on specific features consult the Help.

  1. If you're not logged into the site, do so now by clicking Log In in the upper right of the window.
  2. Once logged in you'll see a new set of information appear where the login link was at, including your name and a link to something called "My Folder". The My Folder is space set aside by the system solely for you to store your pages, files, images, links, etc. Click on My Folder to go there now. You'll probably find it empty but we'll take care of that shortly.
  3. Once you're in your My Folder you'll find the system adds a whole new set of tools in the tool bar, indicating that you have the rights to add things to your folder (and rightfully so, since it is your folder.) Let's add something, then.
  4. Click on the Add to folder menu in the upper right and choose "Page".
  5. When the new page appears, enter a title and add some text in the body. These two fields are required. I encourage people to enter a brief summary of the page in the description field as it becomes useful in the future. That, however, is difficult to do in this case since you do not know what it is you're writing about.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and click Save. Congratulations! You've now added your first item. When you click Save, the system saves the item you're editing, closes it and displays the contents of the folder to which you added the item. In other words, now you're viewing the contents of your My Folder which includes the document you just added.

Using these same steps you may add images (jpeg, png, tiff), files (video files, PDFs, Word, Excel, etc.), links to other websites and folders, which can be used to further organize the contents of your My Folder. Each you create will ask for different kinds of information when you create it. For example, if you add an image, you will be asked to select a photo from your computer to upload as well as provide a name for it in the system. (And yes, there's that description field again!)
