Creating & Managing News Articles
Everything (hopefully) you need to know to create and manage news stories.
Who can create and manage the news?
Chances are if you're reading this and you don't know the answer to this question then you don't have the ability to deal with the news on our website. These instructions are aimed at the couple of people whose responsibility will be to manage this function. If you feel you truly need access contact Journalism & Communication Technical Services at support@jcomm.uoregon.edu and plead your case.
Creating A News Article
News articles may only be created in one location within the system: http://jcomm4.uoregon.edu/articles/. You must first go to this location on the website and logged in to have the ability to create an article.
- Click the Add Item... menu
- Choose News Item. This will create a new article in the articles folder.
- In Title, enter the headline as you wish it to appear.
- In Description, enter the lead or the first paragraph of the story. This will appear with the headline on the news summary page.
- In Body Text, enter the remainder of the story.
- In Image, select an image you wish to upload to associate with the story. This image will appear on the news summary page as well as on the full article page. (You may insert other images in the story by clicking the insert image icon (it looks like a photo of a tree) on the tool bar.)
- In Caption, enter an appropriate caption for the photo. Please do not add images to news articles without captions.
- Click the Save button to save your work.
Publishing An Article
The system will not make an article visible to the public unless it is published. To publish an article, go to that article, click on the State:menu and choose publish. If you're working in a reporter/editor role, choose Submit, which will send the article to the editor's desk for review and approval. Once the editor has completed that process, s/he will publish the article.
Removing/Hiding An Article
To do this immediately, go to the article in question, click on the State:menu and choose Retract. That will retain the story in the system but hide it from public consumption.
You may also set articles to automatically expire at a given date and time by click on the article's Properties tab and selecting an expiration date and time. (Time might not be necessary. I think if you choose just a date it assumes the time is midnight.)
Controlling the Order of the Articles on the News Summary Page
The order of articles on the summary page is controlled by the Modification Date, sorted by new at the top to old at the bottom. (We might be able to use effective date to control order; at least in that case it's relatively easily controlled as opposed to modification date which has no user control beyond editing the document.)
