Graduate Program Admission
Program application deadlines:
January 1: Doctoral
February 1: Communication and Society Master's, Literary nonfiction
and Professional Masters: Magazine, News Editorial.
Strategic Communications: we will begin reviewing applications in early February until all available spots in the program are filled.
Admission to the graduate program is granted for fall term (summer for professional master's program students in magazine and news editorial ONLY; please designate summer term as the start date on your application for admission).
Applicants to the master's programs must have received a BS or BA or equivalent prior to their first term of enrollment.
Applicants for the Ph.D. program must have received an MA or MS or equivalent (rare exceptions may be possible) to be considered for admission.
Required Application Materials
In the interest of saving resources, please submit your letter of intent, resume, and portfolio on double-sided paper. Encourage those writing recommendations to do the same.
UO Graduate School Admission Application
The University of Oregon
offers two different ways to apply to Graduate School: 1) applying
directly on-line; 2) downloading an on-line application.
- The on-line application is available at here.
This form may only be used by those applicants who will be paying
the application fee ($50) by credit card. eCheck option: Applicants can now pay online using a check if they do not have a credit card. We now also accept DISCOVER card. [Note: The secure online
application requires the use of Netscape Navigator® versions
4.06 and greater or Microsoft® Internet Explorer versions 4.0
and greater that support JavaScript, Cookies, and Secure Sockets
Layer (SSL). Macintosh® users require Microsoft® Internet
Explorer version 4.51 or greater.]

- The application can be downloaded at here. The applicant will need to download two copies. After filling out the forms, send one copy to the Office of Admissions, 240 Oregon Hall, 1217 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403-1217 with the $50 application fee. The other copy should be sent to the School Of Journalism And Communication 1275 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403-1275. A copy must be received at BOTH the Admissions Office and the SOJC in order for your application to be processed.
- Official transcripts, showing degree(s) awarded, from all institutions where undergraduate and graduate work was completed. The minimum undergraduate GPA for admission is 3.00. In exceptional cases, an applicant with a lower GPA may be admitted conditionally. These transcripts can either accompany the application and or be sent directly to SOJC. The Office of Admissions also requires official copies of all transcripts that show degrees earned.
- Official Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores no more than five years old. The minimum combined verbal and quantitative score for admission is 1100. In exceptional cases an applicant with a lower score may be admitted conditionally. The GRE code for Institution (University of Oregon) is 4846, SOJC is 4503. For information about the GRE write Education Testing Service, 1974 Center Street, Berkeley, CA 94704, or Box 955, Princeton, NJ 08540 or call 1-800-537-3160 or visit website http://www.gre.org. It takes five or six weeks for scores to reach the SOJC, so be sure to take the exam in time for your scores to arrive before the application deadline.
- An up-to-date resume.
- Statement of Purpose: A 750- to 1,000-word essay describing the applicant’s academic and career goals. The essay should focus on the relationship between the applicant’s past academic and professional experience and his or her future plans.
- A portfolio, string book, clips, or other evidence of relevant
professional work or evidence of scholarly writing and research.
Literary nonfiction applicants should submit copies of their published
work. Doctoral applicants could include an abstract of their master’s
thesis. Communication and Society and Professional master's program
applicants should submit a sample of scholarly writing and/or
research or evidence of professional work if applicable. Should
you wish to have any of these documents returned to you after
the review, you will need to include a self-addressed, stamped
mailing envelope (suitable to accommodate all your documents,
tapes, etc.) with your application. Please do not send
CDs, DVDs or materials enclosed in plastic folders.
- Three letters of recommendation, two from academic sources.
Report on Graduate Applicant Form, (available to download)
should accompany each recommendation. You are applying to an academic
program and should submit recommendations from those best able to
determine your ability to succeed in one. However, should it not
be possible to submit academic recommendations, professional sources
will be accepted. If you elect to sign a waiver to the rights to
view the recommendation and want to include it with your application
packet, then it must be in a sealed envelope with the recommender’s
signature on the envelope flap. In most cases, recommenders send
letters directly to us.
- International students must submit documentation for
either a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of
250 CBT (600 paper-based/100 IBT) or better or an IELTS TOEFL score of 7. For information about the TOEFL, visit their
web site http://www.toefl.org.
Applicants for the Graduate
Teaching Fellowships must submit a score for a Test of Spoken English
(TSE). A minimum score is not required for the TSE. The TSE can
be taken here at the University of Oregon after the candidate is

- Graduate Teaching Fellowships Applications, available to download
here. A limited number
of GTFs are available within SOJC. GTFs are not available to professional
master's program students except under unusual circumstances. There
are additional GTF positions available through other departments.
You can access a list of currently available fellowships from the
Graduate School WebPages (http://gradschool.uoregon.edu/funding_res.html) ATTN: You do not need to submit any additional letters of recommendation for the fellowship; the letters submitted with your admissions application will suffice.
