Congratulations to the 2009 Hall of Achievement Class

Ann Sullivan '42, who paved the way for women in journalism as a reporter at The Oregonian; Steve O'Leary '69, president of O’Leary and Partners Advertising and a noted author and speaker about word-of-mouth advertising, will be inducted into the School of Journalism and Communication’s Hall of Achievement at an awards ceremony Friday evening at the Eugene Country Club. Glenn Cole '92, co-founder of 72andSunny, will receive the Inaugural Eric Allen Award at the event.

Snowden Interns’ Portfolios, Resumes and Networks Validate ‘Ready for Work’ Status

Of 11 journalism students who sought work after completing internships through the Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism last year, eight found full-time jobs in their specialties. It’s an impressive, almost unbelievable statistic—72 percent—at a time when competition is intense among new and veteran reporters, editors and photographers applying for the narrowing number of available positions.

Professor and Associate Dean Julianne Newton and Rick Williams, Dean of the Division of the Arts at Lane Community College and a former SOJC instructor, recently won the 2009 Marshall McLuhan Award for Outstanding Book in the Field of Media Ecology for their 2007 book, Visual Communication: Integrating Media, Art and Science.

Turnbull Center to host Election Coverage Panels, Climate Media Conference this fall

The Center will host “Covering the Coverage: A Report Card for Presidential Campaign Reporting” on Thursday, October 2 at 4:00 p.m., in conjunction with the week-long Grand Opening of the University of Oregon Portland. On Wednesday December 3, the center will host "Climate Change Science, Economics and Policy," a half-day seminar for journalists and editors, in conjunction with the Climate Leadership initiative.

Congratulations, Class of 2008!

More than 3,000 family members and friends gathered to salute the 350 graduates who participated in the SOJC Commencement Saturday, June 14 at McArthur Court. Dan Wieden '67, on campus to receive the UO's Distinguished Alumnus Award, delivered a brief address. The ceremony is available on the special UO channel on YouTube. New photographs added June 30.
