Biography:

Background
Youm joined the School of Journalism and Communication in 2002 as the inaugural holder of the Jonathan Marshall First Amendment Chair. As a prolific communication law scholar, he has published more than 80 articles in a number of leading journalism and law journals in the United States and abroad since 1985. Youm’s law review articles have been cited by American and foreign courts, including the House of Lords in Great Britain and the High Court of Australia, on freedom of expression. In addition, his media law research has often been used by American and international lawyers in representing their clients in press freedom litigation. A member of the Communication Law Writers Group, Youm has been involved in writing Communication and the Law, a widely used media law college textbook in the United States. Recently, he was the area editor of Communication Law and Media Policy of the 12-volume International Encyclopedia of Communication (2008).  He has been named one of seven scholars producing the "most promising" research in journalism and mass communication. Currently, Youm serves on the editorial boards of a dozen major law and communication journals in the United States, England, and Australia.

Research

Youm’s primary research interests include U.S. communication law, press freedom theories, legal research methods in mass media, international and comparative law on freedom of expression,and international journalism. Most recently, he has analyzed the transnational dimensions of U.S. law in connection with internet communication. Youm’s First Amendment law research has appeared in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Communication Law & Policy, International & Comparative Law Quarterly (London), George Washington Law Review, and the Stanford Journal of International Law, among others. He has published a book titled "Press Law in South Korea."
