Biography:
MICHAEL WERNER is a narrative writer and documentary filmmaker based in Oregon. His writing has appeared in publications in Oregon, Florida, Minnesota and Costa Rica. A recent feature on Internet gambling appeared in the fall 2007 issue of Oregon Quarterly magazine. Michael has also written for the Associated Press and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, a New York Times-run daily newspaper. He currently serves as the assistant editor of Etude, an online magazine of narrative nonfiction.
Michael’s documentary work includes a movie about the 48 Hour Film Project. He is currently directing a documentary about World War II-era conscientious objectors for Oregon Public Broadcasting and is producing another about the effects of global warming on Oregon.
As a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication, Michael taught courses on writing, audio-visual storytelling and research methods. He has also served as an instructor of multimedia journalism for the school's 2008 Dixon Narrative Workshops and as a guest presenter on multimedia journalism at Wordstock 2007—Portland's Annual Festival of the Book. In 2007, Michael was awarded the prestigious Politz Graduate Scholarship in Journalistic Writing for his work in narrative nonfiction.
Prior to coming to Oregon, Michael spent two years in Costa Rica where he served as co-director of a university English program.
