Biography:
Background
Stavitsky directs the SOJC's programs in Portland. In 1994, he won the School of Journalism and Communication’s Marshall Award for Innovative Teaching and, in 1995, the University’s prestigious Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching. Stavitsky has published in numerous academic journals and is the author and co-author of books on public radio journalism and public broadcasting history, including Independence and Integrity: A Guidebook for Public Radio Journalism and A History of Public Broadcasting. He has worked in television as a news director, anchor and investigative reporter, and in radio as a talk show host and sportscaster. Stavitsky is a consultant to public broadcasting organizations and has also been a visiting professor at The University of Tampere, in Finland.
Research
Telecommunication policy and new-media journalism are the focus of Stavitsky’s research. He is interested in the Federal Communications Commission, public media and the digital transition. His current work seeks to enhance the editorial independence of public broadcasting.
