Established in 1999 at the School of Journalism and Communication by the late Ancil Payne, the Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism honor journalists who encourage public trust in the media by practicing the highest standards of the profession in the face of economic or political pressures. They are given in three categories: news organization, individual, and collegiate media. Winners are The (Spokane) Spokesman-Review and The Phoenix New Times in the News Organization category; Ashley Gough, editor of The Mount Observer (Mount Wachusett Community College, Gardner, Mass.) is the winner in the Collegiate Media category.
