Reactions to discussion about public relations in class

This week we focused on the development of public relations and where we see public relations moving towards in the future. When public relations first began to be originated was when newspapers were first being published. To me it seems that public relations keep growing as our world gets smaller and more connected. We talked about in class that people in the turn of the 18th century were very separate from one and other and not connected at all. As newspapers and other forms of media and entertainment began to become popular, more people began connecting with each other. PT Barnum was one of the first people to engage in public relations. He traveled around America claiming to perform "The Greatest Show on Earth". This title of his show is a very bold statement. Nobody truly knew if his show was the greatest show on earth, nor could they measure it to other shows because everyone has different opinions. Yet, the use of this title definitely got him an audience as well as publicity. It was a clever way to gain public relations and advertise, and get his name known. As time went on public relations has developed and morphed into something new. Advertising on television, billboards, and before movies has now been used for a few decades. Many people are starting to get fed up with all the advertising so companies have to find a new way to advertise. In many television shows, certain products are being advertised subtly, forcing the viewers of the show to watch, since they are watching the show. Seeing how much public relations has developed in the last century, makes me curious to see how much will have changed in another few decades.
