SOJC advertising students inspired by Kevin Roddy '82

One of the greatest experiences for a journalism student is hearing from one who has made it. SOJC advertising students got just that on Thursday, February 28th when Kevin Roddy came to campus.

Roddy, an SOJC alum, is now the Executive Creative Director of Bartle Bogle Hegarty US in New York, where he oversees and helps develop the advertising for all of the office's clients while continuing to pursue his passion as a copywriter.
On his first visit back to campus since graduating in 1982, Roddy shared this passion and his experience on Thursday while mentoring and inspiring advertising students (and reconnecting to his life as an undergrad with a trip to Rennie’s).
The day started in the Winter Room, where students gave fifteen-minute presentations on topics ranging from digital strategy to sustainability.
Next, Roddy made his way to the Ben Linder room of the EMU where he met with three advertising classes and talked with them about what to expect in the field. He emphasized that professionals need to focus on producing good work. “If you consistently do a good job, the money will follow,” he said.
Roddy also discussed new directions in advertising and offered advice on how students can market themselves to employers in terms of portfolios and design work.
Roddy ended his day with a presentation to the SOJC Ad Society. There, Roddy showed some of his own work, which has earned him awards from The One Show, D&AD and Cannes.
Megan Nuttall, a junior advertising major, said "Kevin told us to think big, to take advertising beyond the traditional sense and make change. It's inspiring to hear that 'big wigs' in New York are pushing for the same changes in the industry that we are.”
