The School of Journalism and Communication welcomed Will Sutton on Monday, February 23rd to campus to share his wisdom on finding jobs and internships in today’s economic climate. Mr. Sutton is the former president of the National Association of Black Journalists and now the Director of Communications at Achieve the Dream, a national organization focused on the success of community college students.
Mr. Sutton inspired laughs and intense note taking among the 40 to 50 students who attended on Monday night. During his lecture about professionalism and how to create an outstanding resumé, Sutton emphasized the importance of context, which included advice about how to tailor resumés to the company you’re applying with. “Don’t ever title a cover letter with ‘To Whom it May Concern,” he said. He also gave advice on "how to avoid sounding fake or convoluted in your resumé." "Do not use the word utilize.”
Several students took the opportunity to meet individually with Sutton the following day for resumé editing and tips, and he received several ‘thank you’ e-mails from appreciative students. The event was a great success. The School of Journalism and Communication and the student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, would like to say thank you, too.
