Change is the keyword that defines the context of this course. Technology is one of the primary change agents. The power, speed, and ease-of-use that has transformed technology in the past 10 years has begun to exhibit major impacts on the world of commerce. In particular, the interactive world of "cyberspace" is changing the relationships between advertisers, advertising agents, and consumers.
This course examines ways in which computer-mediated communication is changing advertising practice. Readings will also address philosophical issues such as the nature of interactivity and the social implications of interactive advertising. The course also offers basic hands-on training in creating persuasive communication for presentation on the World Wide Web.
This course is open to students who have taken Principles of Advertising and to others with instructor consent. Students must have a university computer account (preferably on Gladstone or Darkwing), be familiar with Netscape and be prepared to devote significant time to web navigation.
Class sessions will include seminar-style discussions of assigned readings, in-class review of examples of Web advertising, lab-based training in the creation of Web pages, individual written and creative projects, and work in small groups on several small projects as well as a major end-of-term project.
There is no textbook for the course. Copies of some reading material will be distributed in class. Other reading assignments will be made from on-line sources.
You are also expected to stay current on issues related to interactive marketing communication. Check the following sites at least once each week.
Advertising Age http://www.adage.com/intertactive/

You will also be expected to subscribe (it's free!) to the Internet Advertising Discussion List. For instructions see http://www.internetadvertising.org/
